Did you know, there are 8 different non-religious ceremonies?

Non-religious ceremonies

These are ceremonies with no religious rituals nor blessings. These ceremonies are conducted by a judge or registrar held in register offices or on grounds that are licensed for marriage ceremonies, such as estates, castles, hotels, and restaurants. They are normally short, more informal, intimate ceremonies. One thing to consider, is that the registrar might have time constraints due to other weddings or events on the same day that he must be present for. Some registrar offices are not aesthetically appealing for wedding celebrations and can have limits on music and bringing food on the premises.

Humanist ceremonies

With rituals, but without any religious elements. In England and Wales, these weddings do not hold any legal status. To make it legal you must have a civil wedding at a register office or have a registrar present at the ceremony. In Scotland, however there are celebrants from the Humanist Society of Scotland, who are authorised to conduct legitimate marriages.

Humanists don’t believe in God, but believe in “good within human beings, in their equality, and in the individual right to freedom of choice in the main decisions of life”. Instead of traditional wedding vows, couples exchange their own written vows that speak of their love and promises to each other. They do exchange rings, have selected readings and even the lighting of a unity candle, so they can feel like religious ceremonies, but they are not held in churches and God is not mentioned.

Tree planting ceremony

Calling all nature lovers and environmentalists, this is a ceremony for you. The couple each have their own pot of dirt and water and plant a tree together, symbolising their growing relationship, which they must always care for and nurture to grow together. Of course, you’re not limited to planting a tree. There are no rules when it comes to these ceremonies. That’s the beauty of them. You can personalise them for your big day.

Love letters ceremony – Perfect for Anniversaries

If you want something to open later from your ceremony, have a love letters ceremony. The bride and groom write each other love letters and lock them in a box with a bottle of wine to open and enjoy later on in their marriage. This could be for your one-year anniversary or your 50th if you have that kind of patience.

Unity candle ceremony

If you’re a little more traditional a unity candle ceremony is a great non-religious option for couples. This ceremony will make even the simplest venue more romantic and special. The bride and groom each have their own candle and use it to light one candle that symbolises their union. There are special unity candles, but of course you can choose any candle in any colour. This might even inspire you if you’re looking for wedding theme ideas.

Sand ceremony

You can make your non-religious ceremony special by including a sand ceremony. The bride and groom fill a beautiful jar with two colours of sand to create a little work of art that you can cherish throughout your marriage. The mixed sand symbolises the joining of their hearts and lives. The same kind of ceremony is also held using coloured water instead of sand. In this case, the water will be one colour, so make sure you pick colours that work well together so you don’t get muddy water.

Flowers ceremony

If you’re having fun picking out the wedding table flowers and Bouquets you’ll love a flowers ceremony. This ceremony is typically carried out with symbolic roses, but you can choose any flower to match your wedding or preferences. The bride and groom each have one flower, which they exchange and then place them in a vase together. Your close family and friends can participate as well, adding their own flower. You can even have everyone choose their own flower to make it even more symbolic.

Carried out in a religious way or setting

These are not actually considered religious ceremonies, so you can feel free to write your own personal wedding vows. The ceremony might take place in a church, but there will be no religious readings, no mention of God, or religious hymns.

Now that you understand the different options you can choose from, you can begin to personalise your ceremony to meet your personal and spiritual beliefs and values. Whether you write your own wedding vows or hold a special ritual, we’re sure your wedding will be just as you dreamed it would be with some careful planning and a little luck. Then you can check out our unique wedding ideas that will make your day even more special and original.
