In 1962, Alan Baker, the founder of Ampfield Golf Club, turned his mind to producing something unique in the way of a golf course. He liked the idea of the American ‘Executive’ type course which could be played in less time than a full-size course, so he sought the advice of the legendary British Open Champion Sir Henry Cotton. An enthusiastic reply was soon received – with a promise that he would be happy to come along and assess the suitability when a site was found.
Home Farm at Ampfield was purchased and planning permission was granted in 1963. Some 400 trees were planted and the 18 greens were left to mature until Spring 1965.
Sir Henry Cotton paid regular visits as Course Architect, working in conjunction with Hamilton Stutt. These two charming gentlemen fashioned the natural contours of the course and much was learned from then about drainage, grasses and trees.
Ampfield Golf Course was designed for golfers of all abilities and beginners through to the most advanced admire Ampfield and the true test of skill required to play the course.
The fact that this 18 hole course is only 2478 yards most certainly does not tell the full story.
